Agreeing to these terms

These Terms of Use are an agreement between you and Atlas (“Atlas,” “we,” “us”) about your use of the Atlas app at app.atlasai.ca and related services. By signing in, you agree to these terms. If you use Atlas Preview, we also ask you to confirm in the app that you agree, the first time you use it and again when these terms change, and we keep a record of which version you agreed to and when. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Atlas. Our Privacy notice explains how we handle your information.

Early access

Atlas is an early-access product currently available by invitation. Features may be incomplete, change, or be removed, and the service may be interrupted or unavailable. Information could be lost. Keep your own copies of anything you can’t afford to lose. Early access is currently free. If we introduce paid plans, we will tell you the price and terms in advance, and you won’t be charged unless you choose to sign up.

Atlas Preview

Atlas Preview is an invitation-only build offered to selected people on our waitlist. Joining the waitlist does not automatically grant access. You must receive an invitation from Atlas and sign in with the email address you used for the waitlist. Your invitation is personal, limited, revocable, and non-transferable. You may use Preview only for your own study and to evaluate Atlas and provide feedback. All of these terms, including Acceptable use, apply to Preview.

Proprietary and confidential material. Atlas and its licensors retain ownership of the Preview software, interface, designs, branding, documentation, and other Atlas materials. Access gives you permission to use Preview under these terms; it does not transfer ownership or give you permission to distribute Atlas materials. Non-public builds, unreleased features and designs, roadmaps, technical details, testing instructions, and private communications about Preview are confidential where marked confidential or reasonably understood to be confidential from their nature and the circumstances of disclosure (“Preview Confidential Information”).

No sharing or public disclosure. Keep Preview Confidential Information private and use it only for the permitted purposes above. Without Atlas’s prior written permission, do not share, publish, forward, upload, sell, or otherwise disclose it to anyone else, including another Preview participant. This includes screenshots, screen recordings, livestreams, demonstrations, build files, private links, and non-public feature descriptions or test results, whether shared publicly, in a group chat, or in a private message. Don’t upload it to external AI tools or other third-party services. You may send feedback and issue reports directly to Atlas at people@atlasai.ca.

Account access must never be shared. Do not share or forward credentials, sign-in links, one-time codes, session tokens, or signed-in sessions. Do not lend, sell, transfer, or let someone else use your account, including on a shared device. Do not use another person’s account or help anyone bypass an invitation requirement or access restriction. Keep your account and Preview materials secure and report suspected unauthorized access or disclosure to Atlas promptly.

Warnings and consequences. We investigate suspected breaches. For a first minor breach, we will issue a written warning requiring you to stop, secure your account, remove material you disclosed, and confirm the corrective steps by the deadline in the warning. A repeated breach, refusal to cooperate, or failure to meet that deadline may result in suspension or permanent revocation of Preview access and exclusion from future Atlas releases. A warning is not guaranteed for a serious or deliberate breach: intentional leaks, sale or distribution of access, security abuse, or conduct that puts Atlas or others at risk may result in immediate suspension or permanent revocation without prior notice. We may temporarily suspend access during an investigation. These measures do not limit other remedies available under applicable law, including seeking a court order to stop unauthorized disclosure or compensation for proven loss. No penalty or damages are automatic. If you believe a decision was made in error, contact people@atlasai.ca.

What confidentiality does not cover. These restrictions do not make your own notes or course materials Atlas’s property. They do not cover information you can show was already lawfully known to you without a confidentiality duty, became public without a breach, was independently developed without using Preview Confidential Information, or was lawfully received from someone entitled to disclose it. They do not prevent obtaining confidential legal advice or disclosures required or protected by law, including reports to regulators or law enforcement. Where legally permitted, give Atlas advance notice of a legally required disclosure and disclose only what is required. Nothing here limits rights that cannot lawfully be waived.

After access ends. Stop using Preview and, on request, return or delete Atlas’s confidential materials and copies under your control and confirm that you have done so, except for records you are legally required to retain, which remain confidential. This does not require deleting your own notes or course materials. Confidentiality and permitted-use restrictions continue after access ends for as long as the information remains confidential under the exceptions above.

Preview is a pre-alpha service. Builds, features, and availability may change, and participation does not guarantee access to future builds or the public release. Keep your own copies of important work, as described under Early access. Feedback is welcome but does not create an entitlement to payment, rewards, or future free access. Any reward we choose to offer will have its own terms.

Your account

You must be at least 16 years old to use Atlas. Your account is for you alone; don’t share it or let others sign in as you. You’re responsible for keeping access to your email account and Google account secure, because they control access to Atlas. Tell us right away at people@atlasai.ca if you think someone else has accessed your account.

Your content

You keep all rights to the notes, files, recordings, and other material you put into Atlas (“your content”). You give Atlas permission to store, copy, process, and display your content as needed to provide and secure Atlas for you, and to fix any issues you raise with us.

We don’t use your content to train AI models, and we don’t let outside AI providers train their models on it. To improve Atlas, we use information about how Atlas is used, such as which features are used, errors, and performance, rather than the contents of your notes, files, or recordings. Our Privacy notice explains this in more detail.

These permissions end when your content is deleted, except for backup copies, which are removed on their normal schedule.

You’re responsible for your content and for having the rights to put it into Atlas. If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them to improve Atlas without owing you anything.

Recordings and course materials

Lectures, slides, and course materials often belong to your instructors or institution, and recording people can require their permission. You’re responsible for following the law, your institution’s policies, and your instructors’ rules before you record, upload, or share anything, including getting any permission or accommodation that’s required. You’re also responsible for following your institution’s academic integrity rules when you use Atlas. Don’t use Atlas to distribute course materials or recordings to others without the right to do so. You, not Atlas, are responsible if you break copyright or other laws through what you record, upload, or share, such as uploading lecture slides without your institution’s permission.

Acceptable use

When using Atlas, don’t:

• break the law or infringe anyone else’s rights, including copyright and privacy;
• record or upload information about other people without the permission the law requires;
• upload malware or anything harmful;
• try to access accounts, data, or systems you aren’t allowed to, or get around security or usage limits;
• overload, disrupt, scrape, or reverse engineer Atlas, except where the law allows it; or
• resell Atlas or use it to build a competing service.

If you find a security issue, let us know at people@atlasai.ca. If we find that a security issue has been exploited, or that any of these rules have been broken, we may investigate and suspend or close the accounts involved without notice, subject to the warning process and serious-breach exceptions described under Atlas Preview where applicable. We may keep related information for as long as needed to complete the investigation.

Atlas’s property

Atlas, its software, design, name, and logos belong to Atlas and its licensors. These terms give you permission to use Atlas as offered; they don’t give you any other rights to it. University and college names and logos that appear on Atlas’s pages belong to their owners and are shown only to indicate where students study. Their appearance doesn’t mean those institutions are affiliated with, sponsor, or endorse Atlas.

Other services

Atlas relies on services from other companies, such as Google for “Continue with Google.” Your use of those services is governed by their own terms. We aren’t responsible for services we don’t control.

Suspending or ending access

You can stop using Atlas and ask us to close your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms, if it’s needed to protect Atlas, other people, or the law, or if we end early access or the service. Where reasonable, and except as described under Atlas Preview or Acceptable use, we will give you notice and a chance to get a copy of your content first. Sections that by their nature should continue, such as disclaimers and limits on liability and Preview confidentiality obligations, continue after your access ends.

Disclaimers

To the extent the law allows, Atlas is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don’t promise Atlas will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that information won’t be lost. Transcripts, summaries, and other automatically generated content may be inaccurate or incomplete; check them before relying on them. Atlas is a study tool and doesn’t guarantee any academic result.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, Atlas won’t be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost data, grades, opportunities, or profits, arising from your use of Atlas. To the extent the law allows, Atlas’s total liability for any claim related to Atlas is limited to the greater of the amount you paid Atlas in the 12 months before the claim and CAD $50.

Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection laws that can’t be waived or limited by contract, or our liability for anything that can’t be limited by law.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Disputes will be decided by the courts of Ontario, unless the consumer protection laws where you live give you the right to bring a claim in your local courts or under your local laws. Before making a claim, please contact us first; most concerns can be sorted out quickly.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as Atlas grows and evolves. We will update this page and its date, and for significant changes, we will give you reasonable notice by email before or as they take effect. If you keep using Atlas after changes take effect, the updated terms apply to you. If you don’t agree, you can stop using Atlas and ask us to close your account.

If any part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest stays in effect. These terms and the Privacy notice are the whole agreement between you and Atlas about using Atlas.
